Safer Calgary has spent a lot of time over the last three years working with Dutch transportation and Land Use professors, consultants, and students. We apply their work to situations in Calgary relating to placemaking and transportation/mobility issues. Why do we nurture this connection? We do it for several reasons.
- The Dutch have successfully reversed a trend of high injury and fatality rates (especially for children) on their roads. They have done it by making significant changes to infrastructure that makes roads safer for vulnerable users and be creating a safety culture on the roads.
- Diverse views always improve the prospects of generating more interesting and effective solutions and the Dutch approach is very different from most of what we see in North America.
- By looking at different approaches we can see basic principles at work that can apply in our Calgary environment.
- Creating an opportunity for Dutch students to explore the North American urban space helps make their education more broad and complete
The relationship with the NHTV Applied Sciences University and other Dutch consultants has been very rewarding for all of us and we look forward to it continuing. If you haven’t connected with us on this relationship yet, make sure you do soon. It is fascinating and effective. Watch for Safer Calgary’s third instalment of the Safe and Smooth program this March and our first European Field Trip scheduled for May of 2015.
